I used to spend way too much money on those pre-bottled immunity shots whenever I felt like I had a cold coming or felt a little run down and while effective, I just couldn’t justify the cost. Luckily, making your own is so much easier than you think!

Ginger shots benefits

Ginger shots blend ginger root, citrus, and other healthy ingredients into a juice. Fresh ginger is very potent, so the juice is only served in small amounts (1 to 2 ounces at a time) and drunk a maximum of once per day.

The shortlist of healthy ingredients loads these wellness shots with immune-boosting, anti-aging, and gut-healthy properties, all while contributing to weight loss. (As I’m not a doctor, you can read more about these here and here).

Here are some reasons why I LOVE this recipe:

  • Highly nutritious. Just looking at the ingredients themselves makes you feel healthy and wholesome!
  • Perfect texture and flavor. The texture is smooth and refreshing. Thanks to the pineapple and coconut water, it’s full of tropical flavor. The ginger is evident but not overpowering.
  • Affordable. I used to pay up to $5 for one immunity shot at the grocery store. Making your own works out to be less than 40 cents.
  • No juicer needed. I used to think that I needed some fancy cold-pressed juicer to whip these up but nope- All you need is a simple blender.

Ingredients needed

These turmeric ginger shots are so easy to make and need a quick trip to the greengrocer. Here is what you’ll need:

  1. Ginger. Fresh ginger root will give the ginger shots a potent, almost spicy flavor. If you can’t handle the strong flavor, use ground ginger instead.
  2. Orange and lime juice. Freshly squeezed, if possible. I sometimes also peel the citrus and throw the fruit into the blender for a more intense citrus flavor (but not everyone likes this).
  3. Pineapple. Fresh pineapple gives the ginger shots a tropical sweetness while sneaking in high levels of vitamin C and bromelain for easy digestion. If I’m making these shots for myself, I sometimes omit this.
  4. Coconut water. Coconut water is refreshing, hydrating, and sweet. I like to use a little bit to thin the consistency down and also add a little more sweetness. Feel free to use plain water instead if you want.
  5. Turmeric. Optional, but adds an extra layer of nutrition.

How to make ginger shots

Step 1- Blend

Blend the ginger, orange juice, lime juice, and pineapple in a blender until smooth.

Step 2- Strain and serve

Strain the juice through a strainer, add the coconut water to the strained juice, and serve. Enjoy!

Recipe tips and variations

  • Juice the citrus the easy way. Juice the fruit using a citrus reamer rather than squeezing them by hand. If you don’t have a citrus reamer, cut the citrus in half and place it in between the handles on a pair of tongs. Squeeze over a bowl until you have all the juice you need.
  • Make a large batch. To make a larger batch of ginger shots, double or triple the recipe and store the mixture in an airtight container in the fridge. Use within 3 days or freeze for longer. If I have time, I like to store these in little 2-ounce bottles for a quick pick-me-up.
  • Include the pulp. I love thicker juices and drinks, so if I’m making these for myself, I add some citrus pulp at the end. Again, this is not for everyone.
  • Add turmeric and black pepper. Up to 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric or 1 tablespoon of fresh turmeric gives ginger shots anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, while a pinch of black pepper helps our bodies absorb these nutrients.
  • Add greens. Blend spinach, kale, or your favorite leafy greens or fresh herbs into the juice.

Storage tips

To store: Keep the strained juice in an airtight container or pitcher and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

To freeze: Pour the ginger shot juice into ice cube trays and freeze until solid. Transfer the frozen cubes to a ziplock bag and freeze for up to 1 month. Let as many cubes as you need thaw in the fridge overnight, then drink the next day!

Everybody reacts to ginger shots differently. For some, the acidity from the pineapple and citrus juice will be too much to enjoy every day (all that acidity can lead to heartburn). For others, one shot per day is just enough!

You can have a ginger shot at any time of day. Many people like to drink them in the morning, as the potent ginger does a great job of waking you up! This also makes it a great pick-me-up for sleepy afternoons.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 1/2 ounces ginger
  • 1 large orange
  • 1 lime
  • 4 1/2 ounces pineapple
  • 1/2 cup coconut water

Instructions
 

  • Slice the peeled ginger into small cubes. Juice the orange and lime and set aside.
  • Place the ginger, orange juice, lime juice, and pineapple in a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Strain the juice through a fine mesh strainer and add coconut water to the strained mixture, discarding the pulp.
  • Serve fresh or refrigerate for up to 3 days.
